Bhagavad Gita · Adhyay 2, Shloka 58

यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वशः।
इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस्तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता॥

Hindi: Jaise kachhua khatra dekhkar apne saare ang andar kheench leta hai, waise hi jo apni indriyon ko vishayon se kheench leta hai, uski buddhi sthir ho jaati hai.

English: Just as a tortoise pulls in its limbs when it senses danger, a person who can pull their senses back from what tempts them has a steady mind.

Gita mein yeh kab kaha gaya

Arjun ke sawaal 'sthitaprajna kaisa hota hai?' ke jawab mein Krishna Adhyay 2 mein kachhue ki misaal dete hain.

Yeh shloka hi kyun?

Krishna ne indriyon ko maarne ya khud se nafrat karne ko nahi kaha. Unhone 'samharate', yaani samet lene, ko kaha, jaise kachhua khatra dekhkar karta hai. Phone ki aadat ke liye isse sateek misaal Gita mein nahi.

Katha: Vikram ka "aaj aakhri baar"

Vikram, 34, from Delhi, has said "bas, aaj aakhri baar" about 400 times. If "aakhri baar" were an Olympic sport, he'd have a gold medal. Every night he takes the phone to bed "just to check the time," and at 2 am he is still "checking the time".

His Nani once told him about Rishi Vishwamitra, who did years of tapasya until the apsara Menaka came along and his concentration broke. Years of effort seemed lost. But Vishwamitra didn't say "main toh bekaar hoon" and give up. He got up, went back to his tapasya, and later became a Brahmarshi. Falling wasn't his story. Getting up was.

Vikram realised he wasn't a bad man. He was a tortoise who had forgotten how to pull his legs in, and the apps on his phone were built by clever people to keep his legs out.

Itni si baat hai

You're not dirty or weak. Your senses were trained by apps designed to hook you, and they can be retrained. Uddhared atmanatmanam (6.5): lift yourself up by yourself.

Bas itna karo
  1. Keep your phone outside the bedroom after 10 pm and buy a cheap alarm clock.
  2. Turn on the content filter on your phone.
  3. When the urge comes, give it 10 minutes: leave the room, drink water, walk. If you slip, start again like Vishwamitra.

Mantra: ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय (Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya), 11 times before sleeping.
